Donald J. Payne, 86, of Hot Springs Village passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at St. Luke’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Donald was born on October 24, 1927 to William and Loretta (Wagner) Payne in St. Louis, Missouri.
Don was a WWII veteran and a member of the 82nd Airborne Division under the command of General Gavin. After the service, he attended Culver-Stockton College and graduated in 1952 with a B.S. degree in Business. He was a member of the TKE fraternity while attending college. Don’s career was in sales for the Scott Paper Co. as district Sales Manager and ventured on his own to found the D. J. Payne Co. in 1964 as a manufacturer’s representative in the Chicagoland area.
After enjoying a successful business career, he retired to Hot Springs Village in November 1974 with his spouse, Marilyn (Herbertz) Payne. He was a member of the Village United Methodist Church and active in the Shepard’s Group. He was one of the founding members of the Firehouse Gang and HSV Roadrunners RV Club.
His true passion was golf and RVing with travels throughout the U.S. and Canada. He was a member of both the HSV Golf Association and Men’s 9 Hole Club.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, William Payne and one sister, Jayne (Payne) Clow, and his loving wife of sixty-two years, Marilyn (Herbertz) Payne.
He is survived by his two children: son, David J. Payne of Little Rock, AR and daughter, Mary Jean Payne of St. Louis, Mo.
Memorial services will be 11:00am Saturday, March 22, 2014 at Village United Methodist Church.
